Job Type: Full Time
Location: Downtown-Chicago, IL
Remote Work: Hybrid, minimum 3 days in the office to promote collaboration and interaction with associates onsite.
Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 base salary, plus eligibility for additional bonus incentive program. 

 

Position Overview 

Claims Counsel is a mid-level Old Republic Professional (ORPRO) Claims Counsel focused on handling low to high severity files from notice to conclusion with moderate training, mentorship, oversight, and management by an ORPRO supervisor.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and document assigned claims, including coverage evaluation, investigation, liability assessment, and exposure analysis, under the guidance of a Supervisor or designated Claims Counsel.

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of Old Republic policy forms, industry trends, and issues affecting specific lines of insurance.

  • Identify, evaluate, and address coverage issues, escalating complex matters to the Supervisor or designated Claims Counsel as appropriate.

  • Draft coverage correspondence, claim reports, and other claim-related communications.

  • Communicate claim activity and recommendations with insureds, brokers, underwriters, senior claims management, and other stakeholders.

  • Develop action plans to achieve timely and appropriate claim resolution while maintaining professional internal and external relationships.

  • Negotiate, settle, and resolve claims through direct discussions, mediations, and settlement negotiations, with appropriate oversight.

  • Establish, review, and manage claim reserves throughout the life of the claim in accordance with company guidelines and supervisory direction.

  • Assign, coordinate, and oversee outside counsel and vendors, including review and approval of invoices for compliance with company standards.

  • Actively contributes to achieving favorable claim outcomes through effective claim management, strategic decision-making, and collaboration with supervisors and claims counsel.



 

Qualifications

  • An active license to practice law in good standing.

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant insurance, claims-related, or law firm experience preferred.

  • Private practice litigation experience preferred.

  • Experienced claims handler.

  • Professional Management Liability experience preferred.

  • Obtain adjuster license(s) or agree to obtain adjuster license(s) and additional training as necessary or required to complete claims handling responsibilities with moderate training, mentorship, oversight, and management by a supervisor or designated senior-level Claims

  • Counsel.

  • Willingness to travel for mediations, and client or account meetings.

  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
