Job Description 

As Claims Counsel, you will be responsible for the management of complex claims, from first notice to conclusion, involving Directors and Officers (D&O), Fiduciary Liability, Financial Institutions (FI), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Commercial Crime, Lawyers Professional Liability (LPL), or Miscellaneous Professional Liability insurance policies. The claims may present moderate to high exposure, in multiple jurisdictions, brought against a wide variety of insureds, including privately held and publicly traded companies, nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, and law firms.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and document activity for complex claims, including coverage evaluation, investigation and consideration of multiple factors to assess potential liability and exposure presented
  • Develop action plans to secure appropriate and timely resolution
  • In-depth knowledge of Old Republic insurance policy forms, industry trends, and issues common to particular lines of insurance
  • Draft insurance coverage correspondence and reports
  • Negotiate and settle claims within designated authority level and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and statutes
  • Evaluate, request and assign timely and appropriate reserves to claims; monitor reserve adequacy from inception to resolution of claims
  • Strategically assign, coordinate, and manage outside counsel and vendors to obtain optimal claim outcomes; reviews attorney invoices and monitor expenditures for compliance with billing guidelines
  • Represent Company in depositions, mediations, and trial monitoring as needed
  • Communicate claim activity with insured and internal management, maintain professional relationships with internal and external audiences
  • Work collaboratively and productively with claims team
  • Refer cases as appropriate to supervisor and Company management
  • Collaborate with underwriting partners on policy renewals, identify existing claims and trends to support business efforts and promote client relationships
  • Consider innovative methods to improve claim efficiencies and outcomes
  • Delegate work and mentor assigned staff

 

Job Requirements 

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from accredited law school with license to practice law in the U.S. required
  • 4+ years of relevant insurance, claims-related, or law firm experience
  • Private practice litigation experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Effective advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Detail-oriented, adaptable, and strategic in decision-making
  • Customer-service and relationship oriented; strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to travel for mediations, settlement conferences, and client or account meetings
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials
