Job Description

The Team Leader position is a highly visible role that works with key underwriting leaders and broker partners across the country to enhance our law firm book of business. The candidate will focus on underwriting Professional and Management Liability exclusively for law firms. The candidate will take an active role in underwriting individual accounts while leading the ORPRO law firm team.  In addition, the candidate will be responsible for developing a national strategic plan, regional business plans, and executing a go-to-market strategy to achieve growth on the overall book of business and meet profitability targets.  The candidate will also engage in portfolio-level reviews to determine emerging trends and pivot strategy.  The position works in close collaboration with in-house claims counsel, operations, IT, the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), and the organization's President. 

The role encompasses working with a diverse distribution channel, including retail and wholesale brokers and insureds to effectively and efficiently meet their needs and achieve our financial targets.  The candidate will have the ability to make an immediate impact with the backing of an experienced and supportive group.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Manage key and/or distribution channels, relationships and expectations.
  • Evaluate and analyze and underwrite law firm risks by identifying, selecting and assessing risks: determining premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals in accordance with guidelines and company strategy; creating/presenting the proposal to the agency/broker and successfully negotiating deals. Risks range from small and mid-size law firms to more complex large law firm towers.
  • Develop a network of broker relationships to drive high quality submission flow with an emphasis on cultivating partnerships with regional and national brokers who control high quality middle market business.
  • Build and maintain broker relationships through responsive service, site visits, in person renewal meetings or enhanced knowledge of their customers’ businesses
  • Manage a sizable and complex book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.
  • Formally guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills. Handles underwriter questions and referrals.
  • Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles (coaching sessions), generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.
  • Delegate and monitor work assignments.
  • Set realistic expectations and then inspire and motivate the team to maximize performance
  • Document files in a way that reflects a complete thought process and informed decision-making.
  • In conjunction with CUO, conduct employee evaluations and recommend salary and incentive compensation changes on an annual basis and at time of promotion. Identify performance issues and take appropriate actions.

Qualifications

The candidate ideally will have a Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, or a related field with 5-15 years of LPL or other professional liability underwriting experience. Requirements include strong management, leadership, analytical, communication, and marketing/selling techniques; excellent organizational and follow-up skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to apply underwriting/appetite, tools, systems and resources to achieve goals, solve complex problems, establish and build healthy working relationships, lead mentoring relationships and provide coaching to staff. The candidate must also possess the ability to work both independently and as a team, the ability to manage multiple assignments with attention to detail, work under quick timelines, and show initiative in all aspects of work.
