    Job Description

    The New York Private Company Management Liability Assistant Vice President will serve as the East region’s lead underwriter with responsibility for establishing a portfolio of private management liability lines of business. The AVP will develop a strategic plan and execute a go to market strategy in the East to achieve Old Republic Professional’s private company management liability growth and profitability targets.

    The AVP will report directly to the Private Company Underwriting Segment Executive with a secondary reporting line (dotted line) to the SVP – East Region Leader for regional marketing and business development collaboration.

    The AVP will work collaboratively with the Segment Executive and private company underwriting team to develop and implement overall strategy. This individual will have a stake in developing national strategy, including products, underwriting guidelines, distribution management, process and other critical functions.

    The AVP will work with the SVP – East Region Leader and all underwriters to ensure that Old Republic’s brand awareness and relationships with distribution partners are enhanced for the benefit of all.

    The role will evolve as the book and team are built. Initial emphasis will focus heavily on day to day underwriting and the production of high-quality new business while also serving as a key leader in evolving the private company segment business strategy.

    • Develop a network of broker relationships to drive high quality submission flow along the East with an emphasis on cultivating partnerships with regional and national brokers who control high quality middle market business.

    • Build and maintain broker relationships through responsive service, site visits, in person renewal meetings or enhanced knowledge of their customers’ businesses.

    • Underwrite business submitted to quote by qualifying accounts; assessing risks; determining premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.

    • Heavy collaboration with the Underwriting colleagues in Chicago to assist in shaping national strategy and implementing that strategy within the East territory.

    • Heavy collaboration with the Underwriting colleagues in New York to assist in deepening existing broker relationships and initiating new relationships to benefit ORPRO at large.

    • Manage a sizable and complex book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.

    • Document files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision-making.

    • Formally guide, mentor, and coach underwriters in both technical and professional skills.

    • Individual will lead or provide major assistance in the creation of at least one middle market broker panel (Lockton, Alliant, Hub, USI etc.).

    • Establish an effective cross-selling strategy with Old Republic sister company, PMA in their strongest region, the Mid-Atlantic.

    The ideal candidate will be a creative self-starter capable of building the private management liability business from the ground up. The primary objective will be to build a sustainable and profitable book.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree required.

    • Management experience preferred. Post-pandemic, some travel will be required.

    • Must possess 10+ years of Management Liability underwriting experience.

    • Must possess deep experience underwriting private company D&O, EPL, Fiduciary and Crime.

    • Advanced-level knowledge of insurance products/coverage, marketing/selling techniques.

    • Ability to apply underwriting & business acumen to achieve goals, solve complex problems, establish and build healthy working relationships, lead mentoring relationships and provide coaching to staff.
